Mary Jo Pham is one of the founding voices of contemporary gastrodiplomacy. A career diplomat at the US Department of State before joining the private sector, in 2013 she published Food as Communication: A Case Study of South Korea's Gastrodiplomacy, a now essential study. She defines gastrodiplomacy as the practice, for a government, of exporting its culinary heritage as part of cultural diplomacy, in order to strengthen its national brand image and encourage economic and cultural exchanges.
