Johanna Mendelson Forman

Public diplomacy, food security, gastrodiplomacy and "social gastronomy", with a specialization on the links between food and armed conflicts

Johanna Mendelson Forman connects two worlds rarely thought of together: conflict resolution and the table. A former practitioner for the US government, the United Nations and the World Bank in crisis areas, from Haiti to Rwanda, she created the Conflict Cuisine® program at American University, which explores how food acts as a vector of diplomacy, human resilience and soft power in times of war. A researcher at the Stimson Center where she directs the food security program, she is now developing a culinary diplomacy laboratory with several Washington embassies.
